This tune is dedicated to my father Paulo, and it is the only one for which the music and title preceded the lyrics. I could always sense the words in my head, but I could not put anything on paper.
One day my beloved wife Rosangela brought me lyrics and told me they were for "Pesca." While some verses would not fit the melody, they inspired me to adapt the ideas and write lyrics that were a perfect evocation of my fishing trips with my father past the islands near the coast of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you, Rosangela!

Pesca em Alto Mar
music by Fernando Brandão
lyrics by Rosangela Santiago & Fernando Brandão
Dia de sol, vem convidar
Céu azul colorindo no mar
Na areia junto aos Marimbás
Verde sereno pra se navegar
Sai o barco pesado, vai bem devagar
Abraça seus filhos, com a mãe Iemanjá
Ilhas brancas nos deixam passar
Vara, linha, carretilha no ar
De tantas estórias sentidas
motor já parado e o menino à espera
da guia do navegador
Saudades do pai pescador
Lula de isca na linha de fundo
Balanço das águas à espera
Cherne, Badejo, Tainha, Robalo
Tirivira, Linguado, Cavala e Dourado, lembro
De tantas estórias vividas
Cação lado a lado, e o menino olhando
a calma do navegador
salve meu pai pescador
(depois da repetição)
De tantas estórias sentidas
motor já parado e o menino à espera
da guia do navegador
Saudades do pai pescador
Foi no mar que meu pai me ensinou
A nadar, a pescar, eu sou
Foi pro mar para onde voltou
Com as canções Dorival cantou

Fishing in High Seas
Fernando Brandão/Pedro Lago
Sunny day, comes to invite
Blue sky coloring in the sea
By the sand, near Marimbás
Serene green to navigate
Heavy boat moves out slowly
Hugs its sons, together with mother Iemanjá
White islands wave us by
Fishing rod, line, and reel in the air
Calamari as bait in the deep
Rocking waters, waiting for
Cherne, Badejo, Tainha, Robalo
Tirivira, Cavala, Linguado and Dourado
I remember so many stories I lived
Cação, side by side, and the boy, eyeing
the calm of the navigator
Long live my father, the fisherman
(after repeat)
I remember so many heartfelt stories
The motor has already shut down, and the boy waits for
the navigator’s guidance,
Longing for his father, the fisherman
It was in the sea that my father taught me
To swim, to fish, to be
It was to the sea that he returned
With the songs Dorival sang
